LISTEN TO THE DECEMBER 23, 2015 DIRTY ROOTS RADIO SHOW (THE SIXTH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA)

It's the annual Dirty Roots Radio Christmas Extravaganza! One night each year, as close to Christmas as we can get, my daughter - The Bug (8 this year) - comes to do the show with me. This is the sixth time and it's become such a fun tradition for us. She looks forward to it each year and it's a blast seeing how she handles herself on the show and how that changes from year to year.
She picked a lot of the music you'll hear here. Other than a dud Louis Armstrong song, she did a GREAT job - but that wasn't hear fault....who knew Satchmo would play somethin' so straight?!?!?!
Enjoy, this was a lot of fun.

The First Dirty Roots Radio Christmas Extravaganza, From 2010...

It's become an annual tradition...bringing my daughter, The Bug, with me for the Dirty Roots Radio show just before Christmas. She co-hosts the first hour (and sometimes both hours) and we always have a blast.
But in 2010, it was a crazy idea. Bug was only 3 years old. As I left to do my show that night I asked her on a whim if she wanted to come with. And the rest is history.
It's fun every year and each Christmas show is special...but the first one was truly magical. We had no template and nothing to go on. I just gave a live mic to the 3 year old and went with it. This is one of my most cherished possessions and memories.
This isn't a "full" podcast like you're used to. At the time, I wasn't archiving the shows and since family and friends just wanted to hear The Bug on the radio and weren't as interested in the music (and since we didn't know the fun and magic we were about to capture), I only made a "skimmer" recording...meaning the recorder was only on when our microphones were on. So you'll hear little snippets of songs between us talking.
THIS YEAR'S DIRTY ROOTS RADIO CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA WILL BE WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23 AT 8 P.M. central (Note the change in date...it's WEDNESDAY, not Thursday).
Bug will be with me the first hour, having fun and sharing lots of great Dirty Roots-rific Christmas music (she's getting more active in choosing the playlist this year!). I'll be solo for the second half of the show, which will be a decidedly more "grown-up" affair. I will, of course, cap it off with the annual airing of William S. Burroughs fantastic "A Junkie's Christmas".
Listen live online at www.wgrn.net. The archive will be posted here later that night.
Hope you can join us!

LISTEN TO THE DECEMBER 3, 2015 DIRTY ROOTS RADIO SHOW

What a cluster-F...uh, mess of a show!  I almost didn't even want to archive it.  But, A) it is what it is.  And B) tonight was a unique illustration of how the show helps me, and what happens when I'm off the air for a week.

See...when the show is the only exercise a fella gets...and is the only therapy a guy who needs a lot of therapy gets...not doing the show for a week takes a toll.

I get all jammed up inside...and while you'd think getting back on the air would work all that out...it's not that smooth.  It's more like whatever has the system jammed up all falls out in one fell swoop, and then it's something like a bear being shot with a tranquilizer.

I anticipated being wound up all night and going crazy.  I ended up getting the jam-up out of my system early on then running out of gas.

BUT!  We found the weirdness at the end and we got back on track.

What does all this mean...or have to do with anything...ugh, I don't know.  Live radio man.

Like I always say, when you do it the way I do it and it's live...you can truly do something special.  Or you can crash and burn.

Either way - or usually, when it's somewhere in between - you just gotta walk away from the wreckage with a smile on your face.

I hope you enjoy something here...

SAVE THE DIRTY ROOTS RADIO PODCAST!

Friends,

The Dirty Roots Radio podcast is up for renewal.  We need to raise a total of $180 to keep the podcast alive.  Without your help, the podcast can’t continue.

The podcast was made possible by your generous support and has taken things to the next level, allowing us to share in-depth interviews with special guests such as Scott H. Biram, Jesse Dayton, Kinky Friedman, and Jonny Two Bags – with more to come in the near future! – and providing opportunities for people to share the program with friends and catch up anytime they miss a live broadcast.

My pledge in return for your support is to continue to share the music that moves us, introduce you to new artists whenever possible, and to bring you two hours of stress-free HEALIN’ FEELIN’ every Thursday night.

I’m not going through any pledge drive website this time.  There are minimum goals required there and $180 doesn’t qualify.  I want to keep the goal amount as small as possible to meet the very minimum basic need: Keeping the podcast alive.  BECAUSE…there are plans in motion.  Wheels are turning on the NEXT next level of Dirty Roots Radio and hopefully that information will come sooner rather than later.

If you’re able to give anything and can find it in your heart to do so, please consider a contribution.  Any amount is helpful.  Any amount we receive over the $180, will be set aside for upcoming projects.

YOU CAN MAKE YOUR DONATION DIRECTLY ON THE DIRTY ROOTS RADIO WEBSITE.  ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE HOME PAGE, THERE IS A “DONATE” BUTTON.  PAYPAL AND ALL MAJOR CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS ACCEPTED.

***THE DONATE BUTTON DOESN'T SEEM TO APPEAR ON THE MOBILE VERSION OF THE SITE.  YOU WILL NEED TO ACCESS THE PAGE FROM A TRADITIONAL DESKTOP COMPUTER - OR CONTACT ME FOR MORE INFO/OTHER OPTIONS.

CONTACT ME AT MY PERSONAL EMAIL IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL: DJTWANG77@YAHOO.COM.  FEEL FREE TO MESSAGE ME ON FACEBOOK OR TWITTER AS WELL.

Thank you for your continued support of Dirty Roots Radio!!!

Dirty Roots Radio Special Edition: Kinky Friedman Interview

Kinky Friedman has been something of a frequent guest on this show over the years. He's definitely one of the most entertaining. You don't so much interview The Kinkster as you just wind him up and let him go.

I gotta say, this was my favorite visit with him so far. He's currently on tour promoting his fantastic new album, "The Loneliest Man I Ever Met".

This is the most laid back experience I've had talking to him and he cut loose here even more than usual. Check it out here as we cover everything from his new album and current tour to the state of the world and political correctness to the idiots in Nashville, TN and the greatness of Willie Nelson's "The Red Headed Stranger".

I suppose I should warn you that there is NSFW language here. If yer listening at work, make sure it's on headphones.

Another note...I don't talk politics and I don't court controversy on this little show. But when you talk with Kinky, both are inevitable. Fair warning, there's something to offend everyone here: Red and yellow, black and white....and Jew and Mexican.

I'll quote the Wall Street Journal. They said it best in their review of the new album when they said,"The former leader of the Texas Jewboys has been stomping on sensibilities since the 1970s. He is best known for sharply satirical, sure to offend cowboy songs, such as 'Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed' and 'They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore'."

I don't know what else to say, but if you take it seriously....then you are seriously just missing the point.

We had a bad phone connection at times...I cleaned up as much of that as I could, but you'll hear some crackles and pops from time to time and when Kinky asks several times if I'm still there, that's why.

I hope you enjoy...

LISTEN TO THE NOVEMBER 5, 2015 DIRTY ROOTS RADIO SHOW

I took in the Blood & Trash tour with Jesse Dayton, Jonny Two Bags, and Scott H. Biram in St. Louis last night, got a couple of hours of sleep, spent an hour and a half today guest teaching a college course on interviewing, and was running on fumes by the time I got into the studio tonight.

Mah mind was going a million different directions. We called upon the musical spirits and muse to guide us and followed the path laid before us.

Check out some good stuff here, including a bit of my recent conversation with Jesse Dayton (CLICK HERE to hear the full interview).

Next week: same bat time, same bat channel...and we'll be joined by the one and only Kinky Friedman!

Dirty Roots Radio Special Edition: Jesse Dayton Interview

Completing the hat trick, here we talk with Jesse Dayton!

Jesse will be on tour throughout the month of November with Scott H. Biram and Jonny Two Bags. CLICK HERE to visit Jesse Dayton online and see if they'll be in your neighborhood.

For the uninitiated, Jesse Dayton has played with legend such as Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Ray Price. He's played with the Supersuckers. He also fronted the Road Kings and has numerous fantastic solo albums to his name.

In recent year's he's provided the soundtracks to two Rob Zombie films, one of which he personally appeared in; he's portrayed Dirty Roots Radio friend Kinky Friedman in the stage show "Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman"; and he recently wrote and directed a film called "Zombex".

Fresh off the road filling in for Billy Zoom on X's recent tour, I caught up with this renaissance man as he was prepping to leave town for this new tour.

Jesse's a character and I had a ball talking to him. Hope you enjoy it too!

(Be sure to check out the special edition interviews with Scott H. Biram and Jonny Two Bags and check some of the archived Dirty Roots Radio shows, too!)

LISTEN TO THE OCTOBER 29, 2015 DIRTY ROOTS RADIO SHOW

This close to Halloween, I typically do some kind of Halloween extravaganza show. (It is one of my two favorite days of the year, after all).

But I wasn't feeling particularly Halloween-y Thursday night. So I just followed the muse and rode the vibe that was laid out before us. We ended with a Halloween jam for the homies.

Be sure to check out my interviews with Scott H. Biram and Jonny Two Bags. They're going on tour together, with Jesse Dayton, in November. There are excerpts from the interviews included in the show here and plenty of music from each of the guys.

Dirty Roots Radio Special Edition: Jonny Two Bags Interview

Jonny Wickersham, better known to most of us as Jonny Two Bags, has been the guitar player for my all-time favorite band, Social Distortion, since 2000.  He's also a member of the Cadillac Tramps and previously played with U.S. Bombs and Youth Brigade.

He released his first solo record, the fantastic "Salvation Town", in 2014.

Throughout November, Jonny will be on tour with Scott H. Biram and Jesse Dayton.  CLICK HERE TO check his website to see if they'll be in your neighborhood.  I'll be at their November 4 show in St. Louis and absolutely can - not - wait.

Dirty Roots Radio Special Edition: Scott H. Biram Interview

Scott H. Biram, the dirty ol' one man band from Austin, TX will be on the road in November with Jesse Dayton and Jonny Two Bags. I can't remember a show I've been looking forward to this much in a LONG time.

Scott's been a "core artist" on the Dirty Roots Radio Show for years and he's been a guest on the program several times. It's always great to catch up with him. Check out our conversation here, where we touch on his weird 80's influences, the light and dark sides of life, songwriting, and of course, the upcoming tour.

LISTEN TO THE SEPTEMBER 10, 2015 DIRTY ROOTS RADIO SHOW

Another great night. Another night where I look back on the playlist, see where we started, and wonder how we ended up where we did. Beautiful.

The last half hour or so in particular was especially enjoyable. As a Twitter fan said: "Punk soul (Social Distortion), Prince covers (Lydia Loveless), and King Albert (Albert King)?? What madman is in charge here?"

Doin' that slow burn last section made me want to try a show where I just come in, kill the lights, and let it simmer all night. All smoky and dark and mysterious, like those cheesy early 90's movies where you see the host in the dark booth and the producer in another room late at night. Maybe we'll give that a go one of these days.

LISTEN TO THE SEPTEMBER 3, 2015 DIRTY ROOTS RADIO SHOW

Fresh off the triumph of last week, we were plagued with technical issues yet again.

A faithful few located close enough to tune in on an actual radio were along for the ride, but this one amounted to a dude just playin' rekkids. Tryin' to find my way through church without a congregation.

So...what are we gonna do about these technical issues? Lots to think about. Lots I'm working through. The winds of change are blowing. Stay tuned for....something...

Hoping to get firing on all cylinders again next week!
