John Popper Interview

John Popper (photo by Stuart Levine)

John Popper, lead singer and harmonica player for rock 'n' roll road warriors Blues Traveler recently released his first book.  It's something of an autobiography but more of a collection of generally-connected stories.  It's called "Suck & Blow and Other Stories I'm Not Supposed To Tell".

I've said before that one of the things I love about doing this show is that I don't "have" to do anything.  I have no rules as far as format and don't have anyone to answer to (pretty much, anyway). There's no one telling me what to play, what to review, or who to talk to.  I have no obligation to be impartial.  I'm 100% free to simply share the things that I love.

And I love this book.

As you'll hear in this interview, Popper, considered by many to be the best harp player in the world, is a natural storyteller.  If you've kept up with him and/or Blues Traveler over the years, you're familiar with his easygoing nature and trademark wit.  He brings them both to the book.

And he had plenty of both when we spoke.  I really had a great time talking with him about the history of Blues Traveler, his early years figuring out the harmonica, the book, the debt of gratitude we all owe to Thomas Dolby, and much more.

Sit back and enjoy this one, it's a lot of fun.  And check out "Suck & Blow and Other Stories I'm Not Supposed to Tell" by John Popper!
